According to statistics, South Africa has a very high rate of murders, assaults, rapes (adult, child and infant), and other crimes compared to most countries. Around 50 people are murdered in South Africa each day which gives South Africa the 8th place on the infamous list of "Top Murder Rates in the World". Iraq is on number 2 of that list. Criminal gangs and vigilante violence are blamed for many of the killings, which have actually begun to decrease in recent years. United Nations reports have pegged the crime problem as not atypical of a developing country - in this case, post-apartheid development. This story is about the honorable South African police-elite-force who was commencing large raid around Christmas 2011. In the light of such detremental crime numbers they fight an almost impossible war. What admired me about them is their optimism and their integrety. These men and women put their lives on the line to make South Africa a better place for everyone. It is literally more than just a job. |
